Safari smart-names duplicate downloads

Safari smart download naming tricks
Safari 4.0.3 on 10.6.1 will append “-#” to a duplicate download (“Item-1″, “Item-2″ etc). When the file is named with a version number as in “Application-1.2.3″, Safari will insert the “-#” between the text and the number so as not to confuse any versioning system (“Application-1-1.2.3″).

Editor’s note: Can someone check if this is a Safari 4 feature that works on 10.5 Leopard, or if it’s exclusive to 10.6 Snow Leopard?

  1. I'm pretty sure what it's actually doing is just inserting the -1 before the first period, and you just got lucky that the version number happened to start with -1

  2. This feature is there for a long time; have it on Safari 4 on Tiger as well.

  3. This has been a feature of Safari for many years, going back to at least the Panther days.

  4. under 10.5.8 with safari 4.0.3 this does not seem to work afaiks.
